    Canada is the second largest country in the world after Russia. Canada covers all of the North America continent to the North of the USA except Alaska and the small French island of Pierre and Miquela. Total area of the country is about ten mln square km. Canada is washed by three oceans: the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Arctic. Canada borders on USA on the South. The population of Canada is about 26 mln people. 

Canada's largest cities are Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, Ottawa and others. The capital of Canada is Ottawa with a population of more than 300 thousand people. 

The interior of the country is a plain. The plain extends from the Rocky Mountain to the Appalachian Mountains.

Canada shares with the USA four of the five Great Lakes – Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario, and the 5^th lake is Michigan – is entirely on US territory. All parts of the country have cold weather in winter, which lasts from four to five months.

Canada's beginnings were French and French is the language spoken today by about one fifth of its people. Many settles came to Canada from England, Scotland and Ireland, so today about two – thirds of the people of Canada speak only English. Canada today has tow national languages, English and French. 

Canada is a federal state. The official head of state is the Queen, represented by the Governor-General. Canada has a parliament, which is made up of the House of Commons and the Senate.

Canada is a great industrial country. It is an important producer of oil, gas, pulp, paper. Canada exports oats, sugar best, soy beans, tobacco, potatoes.
