| COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE
Некоторые существительные могут быть и исчисляемыми, и неисчисляемыми, в зависимости от ситуации. Они являются неисчисляемыми (U), когда речь идет о понятии в целом, и исчисляемыми ©, когда говорим о конкретных предметах.
chicken
© цыпленок: We have ten cows and fifteen chickens on our farm.
(U) курица, куриное мясо: Would you like some chicken?
paper
© личные документы, бумаги: I showed my papers to the immigration agent.
(U) бумага в целом: I need to buy some paper – our printer is all out.
time
© момент, раз: We’ve been to Tokyo three times.
(U) время: I didn’t have enough time to finish reading the book.
hair
© волосок: The last time I was at that restaurant, I found two hairs in my food!
(U) волосы: My sister has blonde hair.
room
© комната: Our house has five rooms: the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, living room, and family room.
(U) место, пространство: I’ll make some room for these new books in the bookshelf.
memory
© воспоминания:I have found memories of the volleyball games my friends and I used to play in college.
(U) память:I have a terrible memory. I always forget people’s names!
coffee / water / beer / tea / soda
© порция напитка в определенной таре - стакане, чашке и т.д.: Could you bring us three coffees with milk, and two herbal teas?
(U) напиток, жидкость: I drink a lot of coffe, but I don't drink very much beer.
